GRATEFUL FRED and the GARCIA FAMILY introduce the ALLIGATOR BADGE.
The Alligator guitar was purchased from a Phoenix pawnshop for $250 in late 1970, Graham Nash gave this Fender Strat as a gift to Jerry for playing on a number of his songs.
Garcia immediately adopted it as his main instrument for the next two years, during which it became his first dramatically modified guitar. Although Garcia and the Dead became well known for heavily altering their equipment through the band’s own offshoot gear company, Alembic, it was this Strat that first received the extensive workbench surgery that served as a Grateful Dead hallmark. The new Strat became a favorite known and loved by Jerry and Deadheads, but it didn't receive its official name until Jerry added the alligator sticker to the pickguard.
